what to do...what to do

What would you do?

Let's say you are at the grocery store, in the parking lot. It's dark, and the lot is full of cars, not many people, and you are the only one in your lane. You look down and find two $50 bills (total of $100) lying on the ground.

Good question, right? Actually I am not sure what I would do. I may go back into the store and ask if anyone has lost money, and if someone said they did I would want to know how much and was it 5 twenties or 2 fifties or whatever. I do think a lot of people would try to claim the money even if it wasnt theirs. I would just hate to think it might be someones money that really needed it badly for food for their children. But would I turn it in at the store and let them take care of it? NO. If you put an ad in the paper you would have all kind of nuts trying to claim it. If I had a way of finding out for certain who it belonged to I would definitely return it. Otherwise, Id keep it.

What would you do?

*blush* I would take the money and run.
If I found two 50 dollar bills, I would think the Lord put them in my path for Christmas with 5 kids. I hope that wouldn't make me a bad person!

If it was cash, and no one was around at all, I would keep it. If it was a wallet or purse then I would take it in the store and turn it in.

I would turn it into the store because it happened to me. I found an envelope full of money. I checked back later and found out that the person who lost it. Had cashed their pension check. They got their money back but we live in a small community.

I feel the same as you it's such a dilema!
I'd like to think there are honest folk out there so i'd hand it in with the hope it was claimed by its rightful owner and if not the shop returned it to me as an early christmas present!

I'd lost $40 one time at the store down one of the aisles. One of the kids pulled it out of my purse. Someone was nice and turned it in, so I'd turn it in to the store.

You have to hand it in, it belongs to someone else.

part of me wants to keep it. but yeah i'd turn it into the store. i have a much better conscience than i used to.
several weeks ago, i payed for groceries and all that and forgot to pay for a movie, but only realized when i was in the parking lot. i was with my best friend at the time. and i know how honest she is to a fault and i didnt want her to think less of me so i did go back in and put it on the shelf and walked back out. the buzzer didn't ring or anything. weird huh?

I would return it to the service counter anonymously because if the owner does not return, I still do not want it because it was not mine to begin with.

Not too long ago my daughter found $30 in a parking lot and there was no one around. We had her put $20 of it in the church offering and she kept the rest. I was not with her at the time so I could not make her return it to the service desk. I wanted her to put all the money in the church offering but let her make her own decesion. Turns out the $10 ske kept she spent on something for someone else.

I would ask to post a notice in the store about "missing money" I would then check the validity of the claims. I wouldnt trust the store staff to contact me if it wasnt claimed.
That way I could be sure it went to the owner, if it wasnt claimed then I would keep it, if it was a LOT though I would give some to charity.

Gosh am I glad I stumbled onto your blog!

I'm the person who lost those two $50 bills! But don't take my word for it. Let me describe them -- they're green, they have the number '50' on them, and an image of Ulysses S. Grant.

How can you get them to me? :)

I wish I could definitively say I'd attempt to find the owners. That would be the right thing to do, and messing up my karma by not doing the right thing would be a hideous mistake. Rings, wallets... definately things I would immediately move heaven and earth to find the owner.

It was probably a drug deal gone bad. That is the only reason to have that kinda cash laying on the ground. I would keep looking for the smoke.

I would like to say I am the kind of person who would turn it in no matter what. But if no one was around and the parking lot was empty, I would keep it. But if there were cars and or/people around I would turn it in.

Love the new look here!!

I would turn it in. Who knows it could be some old persons money and that was all they had.

Catch,
I know I wrote a comment to this 1st thing this morning! It probably got the delete buttom or is floatin' out in blogland limbo.
I would hope I'd have the fortitude to get it back to the person who lost it. Must admit that under the circumstances you describe it might be too much temptation sometimes. More likely I'd take it to the police dept and get a receipt. ( my son is a cop, so I'm obliged to think highly of them as a whole.)

I like your answer. You are a good person. I would be afraid that someone in the store would lie and say it was their money like you suggested, so making them tell you what the denominations are would be a good way to ensure they were telling the truth.
