Yuck!

I was out in the backyard today moving stuff so we could cut the grass.......I was in the corner of the yard and I happened to glance at this spider web.....I seen the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life!!! He ( or she) was sitting on this big web...my first thought was to get a shotgun! Then I remembered...I bought a can of spider spray at Lowes.....so up to the house I go to get my can of spray. By then I just had to show the spider to someone, so I got Mom to come down and look at it. She said she had never seen one that big either .It was yellow and black. I told Mom I was going to spray it...she said " watch out it doesnt jump on you"....( that was all I needed to hear)..if this thing would have jumped on me you would have heard me 3 counties over. So I stood back a little and I let him have it....I sprayed and sprayed.....it took him forever to die. He just kind of dropped down from the web but he was still moving...so of course I sprayed him again. Then I sprayed the web real good in case that thing he was sitting on had babies in it. It just freaked me out that we could have spiders that big around here. Has anyone ever seen a yellow and black big spider before? I wish I had taken a picture of it. I dont know much about spiders but that sucker was a scary one!!!!

sounds like an orb weaver, we had one in our tree attached to the kids swing that I had to get down. I did not look foward to it but I got it with a branch and smooshed it

I don't bother with bug spray. I use whatever aerosol I can spare. Plus, it smells much better.

I am nearsighted, and after a shower once, I brought my towel to dry my face only to find a huge roach on it. [Shudder]

Go check out this blog - a blogger friend of mine had a huge spider in her yard that was black and yellow - she did take a picture. Go have a look and see if it was the familiar:
http://omamamia.com/?p=266#comments

It sounds like it's the same type -Black and Yellow Argiope! You can read through the comments as she got lots of information about this particular type of spider. Turns out they are harmless, but ewwwww and yuck! I would have freaked out!

I hate the big ones! I don't remember if I have sen a yellow and black one before. But I have seen some big furry ones. It is kinda scary because spiders (and snakes) are now mating with other breeds so you can never tell if something is poisonous or not.

I am glad you made it through that ordeal!;)

Glad to hear the mystery was solved when you saw the pic on the blog I posted :) And it wasn't much detective work on my part! As I said, I read her blog regularly and your description sounded just like something she had posted about not too long ago! :)

I have a yard full of those spiders. Leave it alone and she'll eat all the mosquitos. My granny told me they were good luck and the old folks would say if you made a wish she'd spin your name in her web overnight and it would come true.

We southern folk just call them common garden spiders and I'd bet that is what Charlotte was.

Nice site.

I think an AXE would have worked better!

Actually, that was a mistake....
That particular spider really does a great job of cleaning up stray crickets, grasshoppers, mosquitoes, flies, and a host of real problem pests.....

Then again, how dare she build such a huge net/web where you can see it, eh?

I ain't no lover of spiders, either, but, we have a few dozen of the really big ones that you described all over the place, and, well, they've been too pretty t'kill.

S'pose that means y'all won't be over fer dinner till after the snow falls, eh?

I've seen your avatar for some time (and admired it greatly I might add :-D)

Have to say I like spiders - sorry to see this one killed in such a way. But, I understand some folks don't like spiders as much as I LOATHE roaches and such... I kept seeing these dead spiders around my house (inside up in the ceiling cracks) and finally my daughter told me she was actually spraying them with hairspray to "freeze" them for all eternity...

I like your blog - I'll be back to visit.
